New York State lawmakers on the verge of passing an amended version of the MRTA 

Albany, New York:​ New York State lawmakers introduced S.854A/A.1248A, an amended version of the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (“MRTA”). This legislation championed by Senator Krueger and Assemblywoman Peoples-Stokes since 2013 embodies most of the core-principles of marijuana justice and consumer rights. For more than a decade, advocates have worked towards this goal, and Senator Krueger believes all that work will come to inception, and this bill may get a vote as early as this week.

New York State lawmakers on the verge of introducing an amended version of the MRTA

New York State lawmakers plan to introduce S.854A/A.1248A, an amended version of the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (“MRTA”). This legislation championed by Senator Krueger and Assemblywoman Peoples-Stokes since 2013 embodies the principles of marijuana justice and consumer rights.

Once the marijuana arrest capital of the world, New York is poised to become the largest adult-use market in the nation. We are encouraged by the improvements legislators have reportedly incorporated into the bill, and we hope that when passed this legislation will respect the balance between the rights and freedoms of cannabis consumers, and marijuana justice.

Unpunished bad policing in the face of public observation and outrage, deteriorates faith in the system that we are told to trust. Public servants are supposed to inspire respect, order and encourage community. We instead are struck by the blatant hypocrisy behind the mantra of "Protecting and Serving". In the wake of the death of George Floyd, justice, community, and order have neither been protected or well served. Inaction in the face of injustice damages the fabric of our trust in the system. So, we hope to see more officers police their own ranks and act upon injustices within their departments, in recognition of the difficult path that lies ahead.
